LONDON SCOTTISH inflicted Nuneaton’s second successive National One defeat, as they swept aside Mike Umaga’s battlers 22-7. Despite the teams starting the day a point apart in the table, the ambitious Exiles conjured up a sterling performance in difficult conditions to keep their bid for back-to-back promotions firmly alive, while Nuns will have to re-group quickly if they are to avoid slipping into an early fight for survival.

Frankie Neale opened the scoring for the big-spending Exiles early on when he kept his cool to slot home a penalty in gale-force winds, before the turning point of the match occurred moments later, when Nuneaton centre Tim Douglas was yellow-carded for allegedly failing to roll away after making a tackle.

Neale failed to convert the ensuing penalty, but Dave Howell made sure Nuneaton didn’t get off lightly when he ran in a 30th minute try which Neale failed to convert once again.

But, four minutes before the break, Neale made up for his two missed kicks when he crashed over to score an important try, before adding the conversion himself to give the hosts a 15-0 lead, and to leave Nuns with plenty of questions to answer in the dressing room.

And Nuneaton demonstrated their resilience when they managed to hang in and see off a spate of early Scottish attacks, before the Exiles’ Simon Amor was sent to the sin-bin after 46 minutes to give Nuneaton a glimmer of hope.

Nuns capitalised on the man advantage when the free-scoring Elliott Brown turned provider to tee up James MacDonald with an easy chance, while Huw Thomas converted MacDonald’s try to hoist Nuns into the clash.

But Rory Damant made sure of the Exiles’ success with a try of his own, which Neale converted to wrap up the win.
