RECALLED winger Jeff Gregson delivered the perfect response with two tries for a rampant Coventry as they overpowered Cinderford 55-5 at the Butts Park Arena. Left out for the game at Sedgley Park the previous week, Cov Kid Gregson scored the first and last of the sides nine tries in an overall team display which had rugby director Phil Maynard purring with delight.

“Jeff took his tries well, and looking at him today he didn’t make any mistakes and he made good decisions in contact,” said Maynard

“That’s how we are looking for guys to come back and it’s another indication of the desire there is in this squad.

“It was a good performance all round and this time we didn’t drop off our game at any stage. It’s the first second-half we’ve won this season. We’d been addressing our defence all week and I thought the lads stood up well today. It’s the key to the future.

“We know it’s not just enough to win games, we have got to get people behind us and play a bit of rugby.

“The fans can see the style we are trying to adopt and I think they are enjoying it.

“We are still a young, developing squad but we are learning all the time.

“We’ve had to learn how to defend, how to play a second half, and now we have to learn how to win away from home.”

Maynard also paid credit to props Martin Kent and 20-year-old Tom Warren. “They had outstanding games,” he said.

“Props tend to be the unsung heroes, but their work-rate and carrying, driving the ball forward, were tremendous and should be highlighted.”
