COVENTRY will resist the temptation to make wholesale changes for the trip to Barking this weekend and instead give the players who flopped in the last game the chance to make amends.

The Blue and Whites face the surprise National One leaders on Saturday on the back of their worst performance of the season – a 40-12 humbling at home to Macclesfield.

Following that match, in which Cov lost their unbeaten record at Butts Park, there will be pressure to freshen up a side that looked so out of sorts.

But backs coach Pete Glackin maintains the players who disappointed against one newly promoted side are determined to do better against the other.

“The boys want to respond so we have to give them that opportunity,” the former Rugby Lions coach said.

“These were the lads who two weeks ago spanked Cinderford so they have shown they are capable. You can’t keep chopping and changing week in week out, you need some consistency and you need to allow the boys to put it right.

“It does not matter who you are, even if you are Leicester Tigers, you are learning about yourself and your opponents every week and you have to have the chance to show you have learned those lessons.”

And Glackin is confident the Coventry players are already showing signs of having done that.

Having analysed the reverse to Macclesfield on Tuesday night, they have identified key defensive issues and have been working on them this week.

Indeed Glackin insists there is no better place to test the theory than at Goresbrook where the National Two South champions have not been beaten all season.

“The response has been really, really good,” he said. “You are always going to get the odd bad week, unfortunately for us it came against a side we should have had a good chance against.

“The players are really looking forward to going to Barking and setting the record straight. They are top of the table on merit and for us it’s the perfect game because we will have to be up for it.”

One enforced change, however, will be at full back where Jon Lowdon’s rib will keep him out for at least four weeks.

Puts a positive spin on the situation, only hope the team play up to the coaches positivity, think it may be a little wishful thinking to expect a result at Barking but . . . . . . . . . . . . . who knows?? fingers crossed then!
