COVENTRY remain on the edge of the National League One relegation zone after a narrow 29-28 defeat at Blaydon – their third successive loss.Coming back from 22-10 down to lead 23-22 entering the final quarter, Cov were hit by a hotly-contested penalty try and then scored from the final move of the game, only for Danny Richards’s conversion attempt to slip past the outside of the post. It leaves Cov one place above the bottom three on points difference and reflecting on a sloppy first-half display which let in Blaydon for three tries.

“Our first-half tackling was probably the poorest it has been all season,” conceded rugby director Phil Maynard, who limited his views on the award of the penalty try to ‘an appalling decision’.

“We read the riot act at half-time and they had a good second half, but they have got to learn that they can’t do that and have to battle from start to finish.

“We work on tackling through the week, we talk about it and continually practice technique and organisation around the defensive areas. Last week we did what we’d worked on, but this week we didn’t.

“It was a great effort in the second half, but we have still got to improve. We made a few more rushed decisions than we normally do and just needed a bit more control. We got a point from it and it might prove very valuable at the end of the season, but it should have been more.

”It puts the pressure on for Saturday’s home game against Wharfedale, but that is not going to be easy against a good side who will take us on for the full 80 minutes.”
