Coventry Nighthawks 19 Moseley “A” 24

Coventry Nighthawks inaugural game against Moseley ended in agonising defeat at BPA last night as deep into injury time, a converted try by Moseley won the game. A bitterly cold night before a good crowd saw a feisty close contest between both sides; with Moseley effectively putting out a 1st team squad back division and Coventry a strong pack with guest lock Pete Kolakowski prominent.  

 

Coventry used the power of their pack to edge a close first half 11-5, with a try by Gregson and penalties by Challis and Higgins countered by a Moseley try.

With Coventry making wholesale changes in the 2nd half play was somewhat disrupted and 2 tries to Moseley with one to Coventry after a driving maul saw the score Coventry 16  Moseley 17. 

With 10 minutes to go Coventry went into the lead with a penalty, only to be denied into injury time with a converted Moseley try.

thats last try could have been from a first team game, aimless kick follow by a lack of first up tackles resulting in a try !!!!

Are the Nighthawks invitation only? the selection seems a bit random with some players from level 9 and uni etc. Were the club stretching to put out a side? i would much prefer to see Coventry adopting Moseley's attitude and provide opportunities for some of the better players from the better juniour clubs to pull on the Cov jersey....were invitations sent out to them???

in reply to covkiddo first of all there was no problem in filling the side.The squad did include a lot of local players as per the last team list.
I am seeing if i can get more info out, but as far as i can see it looks very mmuch like the mose system.

So invitations were sent out to players from the higher league clubs in Coventry and they were ignored by those players there? Unlikely! At this point in time Coventry have an excess of players contracted to them, however i doubt that these players will be keen to sign a contract for another season to be farmed out again to whomever Cov decide, and i doubt the likes of Kenilworth, Broadstreet and Rugby will be willing to foot the bill for their services for another season either.So if the Nighthawks were to continue beyond this season then 17 year olds from level 8 and below are not going to be able to sustain it.

Monday night's team was not the strongest side that could have been fielded, if you want an amateur representative side that can take on other championship 'A' teams in seasons to come then the likes of Broadstreet, Nuneaton and Kenilworth need to be on board. The fact of the matter is they weren't even asked.

I'm sure I saw Mike Umaga having a long and friendly-looking discussion with the Coventry coaching staff after the game. Doesn't he have something to do with Nuneaton these days?

As was Tom Hoines, Broadstreet Head Coach. No Street players were asked to play apart from the two street lads that cov signed which we now have 'on loan'. I know a couple who would love to play a representative match for coventry once a month.
