Leaky defence lets Cov down again in 12-try thriller.

RUGBY director Phil Maynard voiced his frustration with Coventry’s defence after they conceded six tries in a 37-32 defeat at Wharfedale.Cov have scored 78 tries in 22 National League One games – adding six themselves on Saturday – but have also now conceded 75 and with the goalkickers out of form at Threshfield, their generosity at the back proved costly.

 

“It’s disappointing again,” said Maynard. “We are leaking far too many points.

“Our body positions in the tackle were poor and some of those frailties cost us dearly. It just undoes a lot of good work that we are doing in other areas of the game.

“It is something we have talked about a lot and worked on at training but now we need to start looking at it even closer and make sure we completely nail the issue.”

The other telling statistic against Cov on a cold and breezy afternoon was just one successful kick at goal from eight attempts.

“Our kicking off the floor was also poor and you just can’t miss 16 points like that in a close game,” said Maynard.

“There was no shortage of effort or endeavour today and two points away from home at a place like Wharfedale is something many would accept.

“But it is a disappointing result. We have shot ourselves in the foot again and we will need to keep working hard to put it right.”
