Coventry bring in France defence coach Dave Ellis

COVENTRY are seeking advice from defence doctor Dave Ellis to stem the flow of points that has made them the most generous opponents in National One.Ellis, who has just completed another Six Nations as France’s defence coach, will hold a clinic at training this evening as the Butts Park outfit seek a cure for their leaking rearguard.Cov have conceded 651 points in 24 games this season, an average of more than 27 a game, and it is only down to their strength in attack that they have not sunk further down the table.

Both tendencies were in evidence at Stourbridge on Saturday as two lapses allowed Neil Mitchell’s men to open up a 17-0 lead in the first quarter.

But Cov dug deep, with two tries from Jeff Gregson and one from Matt Price and 12 points from the boot of full back Dan Richards to complete the double over the Stourton Park outfit.

But forwards coach Dave Addleton knows something has to be done to shore things up. “We made big strides on Saturday, there was a lot more talking and the boys seemed more comfortable in the system – but there’s still more work to do,” he said.

“There was an element of that at Stourbridge when really it was two errors by us that allowed them to take the lead.

“We’ve got to continue addressing this issue and we’ve brought Dave Ellis in to make sure we are not missing something, we can’t afford to leave any stones unturned.”

On the positive side though Cov at least showed outstanding spirit to come back, especially given they fact they had only won two of their previous nine matches
