Record-breaking wingers lead Coventry to flying finish

WINGERS Jeff Gregson and Tom Harris wrote their names in the record book as Coventry produced a spectacular finish to their National League One season at the Butts Park Arena.

Gregson ran in four tries in Cov’s 56-29 win over Tynedale, equalling Andy Smallwood’s 12-year-old club record for a single league match, while Harris weighed in with two on the opposite flank to finish on 18 for the season, one better than Smallwood’s record from the 1996-97 campaign.

Both players were at Rugby Lions last season, along with centre Jack Green who claimed his first two tries as Cov came back from 24-10 down after 28 minutes to run the opposition ragged in the second half.

“Jeff has had a great season for us,” said rugby director Phil Maynard. “You only have to tell him something once and he takes it on board and he is a different player now from the one we saw at the start of the season.

“Jack and Tom have also come up from the level below and are both young players who have shown that they can compete in this league and it’s like that throughout the squad.

“We have got something to build on here for the first time in three years and to come to where we are now from the position the club was in a little over 12 months ago is a considerable achievement.

“It’s a great compliment to the board members who have done so much hard work to secure the club’s future and to people like Dave Addleton and Tony Gulliver, who are Blue and White through and through and have stuck with the club all the way.

“This was a fantastic way to finish the season in front of our supporters and we can now look to move forward with the core of this squad.”

Flanker Alex Nash was voted player of the season by the supporters, with the players’ player award going to back row Seb Pearson and Brian King named clubman of the year.
