Coventry Rugby results roundup and NL1 previews.

By
May 2 2011

With only 5 teams having completed their league programme by this official final fixture date, the rest having either 1 or 2 games left to play, the one remaining relegation place has still not been settled , neither has the promotion fight between London Scottish and Barking.

Redruth continue their great escape with a bonus point win at Wharfedale, which takes them out of the 3rd relegation place. This is filled by Sedgley Park, who had a poor result against Cambridge. With Redruth having completed their fixtures it is down to next Saturday’s clash between Sedgley Park and Macclesfield, which of the 2 will be relegated.

It is equally tight at the top, with another bonus point win for London Scottish, their 25th win in a row, whilst Barking remain unbeaten with a hard fought win over Cinderford.

The crunch match comes next Saturday when they both meet.

Coventry with their great come back win over Tynedale, which reverses their opening day loss to them, climb to 8th position, but having completed their fixtures are relying on Stourbridge and Cinderford to lose next week to maintain this league position.

NL1 RESULTS   30th APRIL:

Blackheath      17              29    London Scottish

Blaydon           50              19    Otley

Cambridge       78              23   Sedgley Park

Cinderford       10              14   Barking

Coventry          56              29   Tynedale

Launceston       21             28   Rosslyn Park

Macclesfield     48             24   Stourbridge

Wharfedale       22             33   Redruth

FINAL NL 1 FIXTURE PREVIEWS:

2nd    May            Tynedale         v     Blaydon

7th    May             Barking           v     London Scottish

                           Cinderford       v     Cambridge

                           Launceston      v     Stourbridge

                           Sedgley Park    v    Macclesfield

14th May             Macclesfield    v    Barking

21st May             Cinderford        v    Wharfedale

The final NL1 fixtures have been published with 2 key games this Saturday, at both ends of the table. The simplest one is that between Sedgley Park and Macclesfield, a loss for Sedgley Park or no more than 2 bonus points will see them relegated with Redruth escaping. A bonus point draw or win by Sedgley Park will see Redruth relegated.

The crunch match between the top 2 , when Barking face London Scottish may not settle the promotion issue. A bonus point win for London Scottish would promote them, whilst a bonus point win for Barking without London Scottish getting one would promote Barking. The final outcome may not be known until Barking visit Macclesfield on the 14th May.

On a more parochial matter Coventry will remain 8th in NL1 provided Cinderford and Stourbridge lose to Cambridge and Launceston respectively.

Promotion to NL1 has been confirmed for Ealing Trailfinders as champions of NL2 south, and Fylde as champions of NL2 north. Fylde are well known to Coventry as being a regular opponent well before the league system started.

The final promotion place will involve a playoff between Jersey , runners up from NL2 south and either Leicester Lions, Loughborough Students or Westoe, as runners up from NL2 north, who have yet to complete their league fixtures. The final playoff date is expected to be the 28th May, this result and Coventry’s final position will be advised when known.

On a personal note I hope supporters have enjoyed these previews  and  round ups during the season, and it hoped to continue with these next season. Any suggestions for changes, ideas or additions are always welcome, just drop me a message.

news as just come through that the Cinderford/Wharfedale match due on the 21st may has now been cancelled. If so this means that Coventry cannot be overtaken by cinderford therefore Coventry are guaranteed at least 9th position and 8th if Stourbridge lose.
