FIVE of Coventry’s summer signings are in the starting line-up for their opening game of the National League One season against Cinderford tomorrow at the Butts Park Arena.

Backs trio Luke Myring, Mark O’Connor and Lewis Barker are set for their Cov league debuts, while the pack includes returning duo Jamie Miller – captaining the side from No.8 – and Benjamin Dechartres.

Newcomers Charlie Mumford, Matt Weller and Bruce Thomas are among the five replacements, with rugby director Phil Maynard conceding that selection was far from straight forward after encouraging performances against higher-ranked Doncaster and Newport in the last two warm-up games.

“It was very difficult, and probably the toughest selection meeting I have had in my time at the club,” said Maynard. “There is pressure for places all the way through and there was some strong debating in certain positions.

“As always there will be some disappointed people but we can only go with what we believe is the right team for the day.”

Those who have missed out will have an early chance to press their claims, however, when Cov take on Rugby Lions at the Butts Park Arena next Wednesday evening – the first in a full list of friendly fixtures which will run alongside Cov’s away league games.

“The list should be completed next week,” confirmed Maynard, “but it means we will have something like 28 games at home this season. Every time we are away in the league, there will be a game at home either on the Saturday or in midweek.

“We are not calling it the second team, or the Extras, they will all be squad games and we already have Northampton, Nottingham, Bedford, Oxford University and Cambridge University on the list.
