Maynard tells Cov forwards to regain set-piece prowess.

PHIL Maynard has promised his Coventry side will work on the set-piece deficiencies that threatened to derail their start to the season.

The Butts Park outfit opened their National One campaign with a gutsy 21-15 win over powerful Cinderford.

But for long spells they were well under the cosh and Cinders didn’t so much go to the ball as monopolise it, which meant Coventry had to rely on their defence and goal-kicking to start off on a winning note.

In one respect that is pleasing because neither quality was available to Cov last season, as they had one of the leakiest rearguards in the division and no recognised place-kicker.

They addressed that in the summer by working hard on their organisation and bringing former Leicester man Luke Myring to the club and the experienced midfielder was successful with four of his five attempts at the sticks.

But Maynard knows his team cannot rely on that every week and insists his forwards must get back to building a solid platform.
