Coventry 22 Stourbridge 17.

COVENTRY are still far from firing on all cylinder but for the second successive home game they had enough about them to grind out a valuable win against stubborn opposition.

This time Cov had plenty of the game, putting Stourbridge under pressure at a poorly-refereed scrum and winning more line-out possession, and while there were a number of missed first-up tackles, their defence was generally solid.

What Cov did with the ball as an attacking force, however, left questions as they struggled to impose their authority around the ruck area and lacked directness and a cutting edge.

In essence, it was a game between two sides who are searching for their rhythm in the early stages of a long season and Cov are that little bit further along the way than their Midlands rivals, who have now lost three in a row. The outcome was effectively decided in the opening quarter as Cov raced into a 17- 0 lead with a stiff wind at their backs.

Luke Myring kicked a seventh-minute penalty and four minutes later Elliott Read found a gap in the Stour cover and set up the forwards for a drive which saw prop Adam Parkins claim the opening try. Myring converted and he was on target again when Cov were awarded a free-kick from a scrum a few metres out from the Stour line and flanker Brett Daynes scrambled over for the second.

With lively scrum-half Lewis Barker at the helm of everything, Cov might have had more as Stour struggled for any cohesion but the introduction of the experienced Jim Jenner steadied the visitors and they gradually clawed their way into the game.

Mark Woodrow kicked a head-on penalty on the half hour, and after Peter White had knocked on going over the line with Cov flanker Alex Nash now in the sin bin, the scrum-half made no mistake when a second opportunity came his way two minutes later as he broke off a line-out maul to go over for a try which Woodrow converted to peg the half-time score back to 17-10.
