COVENTRY’S promising start to the National League One season took an incisive step forward with their performance in sweltering conditions at Goresbrook.

Barking had looked the more threatening in a closely-contested first half but  just as they are struggling to find the form that took them so close to  promotion last season, so Cov have the growing confidence of a side that is  winning games and it showed conclusively after the break.

Cov were in a different class in the second half as they lifted their game to  another level and Barking had no answer until a late injury-time flurry put a  flattering slant on the final scoreline.

The platform for Cov’s win was again their defence, an area in which the  organisational influence of centre Luke Myring cannot be under-estimated, as  Barking’s speedy backs posed some early problems.

Thanks to this, Cov were never behind in the game, and with their line-out  working well, a tireless display by their loose runners – flanker Alex Nash  prominent all over the field in attack and defence – and half-backs Elliott Read  and Lewis Barker asking more questions of the opposition as the game progressed,  the outcome was increasingly inevitable.

Cov did show some anxiety as they pressed for the fourth, bonus-point try  which had eluded them in previous games and it took 25 minutes to come after  Nash’s second score of the game had put them clear at 28-10.

But it came in the end, and with it another lift to morale and the belief  within the squad that they can go places this season.

Barking had the better of the early exchanges, but Chris Ashwin missed two  penalty chances before the visitors took the lead against the run of play – Myring straightening the line as the ball was moved left and going through a gap  with Nash on his shoulder to go over by the posts.

Myring converted but eight minutes later it was all square when the centre’s  pass was intercepted by home winger Ian Davey who sprinted in from 35 metres  with Ashwin converting.

The two kickers exchanged before Myring nudged Cov ahead for the third time  at 13-10 with another penalty and the score stayed unchanged for the rest of the  half with Barking enjoying more possession but Cov continuing to defend  well.
