SO WE didn’t pick up the win away from home at the weekend against what proved to be a tight-knit Cambridge side, however, it was certainly a much more positive performance by our boys.
Last week I said I hoped for the same outstanding display from our scrum to allow our backs to play with more confidence and I think in the end that’s what we got.
What was most pleasing for me, as a back, was seeing the backs making cutting breaks throughout the game which is something we haven’t seen for a while and also the performance of Elliott Read who looked much more like himself making nippy breaks and controlling the game well from ten.
It was also pleasing to see the new boys come into the team after only being with the squad a short time and fitting in with assurance.
They added something different to the team and it feels as though all of the new guys coming into the squad has put everyone a little on edge and has killed any complacency which was sneaking into the squad.
This has had a knock-on effect in training in the last few weeks with everyone again knowing that a bad training session or a bad game can lose you the shirt and if that happens, it will take some getting back.
This competition for places is key in any squad and I think you always need the guys playing to be being pushed as hard as possible to keep them on their toes.
This not only kills any complacency but it also drives each and every player, whether they are pushing for a shirt or fighting to keep it, to work harder and strive for continuous improvement.
