Centre Greg Evans expects defensive examination at Tynedale

COVENTRY star Greg Evans lauded his team’s defensive performance in last weekend’s win over Macclesfield but says they’ll need to be even better at Tynedale on Saturday.

The Blue and Whites go to Corbridge looking for their first away victory and while Tynedale’s once impressive home record is no longer quite so imposing, they remain an ambitious and potent attacking force.

Indeed Evans experienced just how incisive they can be when he was at Bees last season, as the Solihull outfit were relegated despite winning nearly as many games as the North East side.

“They had one of the highest totals of bonus points in the league last season,” the centre said.

“They only won a couple more games than we did with Bees but because they got so many bonus points they ended up 26 points clear.

“That shows they will be a dangerous side again. Like Ealing, Cambridge and Loughborough they like to run from deep and it’s going to be a difficult afternoon for us defensively.

“But we’re coming off the back of a good performance and we’ll go up there with a lot of confidence.”

Coventry aren’t doing badly on the try bonus front themselves. They have already taken four from their first six games, which is effectively worth another win, compared against just seven in the whole of last term.

Another one came last Saturday when they hammered Macclesfield 38-3, although they had to wait until the last minute to score the all-important fourth.

Nevertheless the former London Welsh and Bees midfielder claimed Coventry’s most recent display was their best of the campaign.

“It was probably the most complete performance so far this season. We had played in patches up until last Saturday, done well in a first half or a second half but not strung 80 minutes together.
