Tom Poole thankful for Coventry chance.

PROMISING second-row Tom Poole has set his sights on remaining in the Coventry side after waiting more than two months for his first start. The youngster, who joined from Kettering in the summer, made his full debut in Saturday’s 27-11 win over Wharfedale and gave a solid display in an all-round decent team performance.

That result was the perfect response to the previous weekend’s disappointment at Esher and although Cov missed out on a try bonus, they did at least enjoy a couple of excellent showings from Cliffie Hodgson and Greg Evans in particular.

What was most pleasing for rugby director Phil Maynard was the way the players who came into the team thrived given the oxygen of first-team rugby.

Poole was one of seven changes to the side and virtually to a man they brought an energy and enthusiasm, fuelled by a desire to prove themselves.

Certainly that was Poole’s feeling. “It’s a big step up for me but it’s nice to be given the chance,” he said.
