Coventry will today assess the extent of the injury that forced Matthew Jones off during the first half of their final pre-season match.

That came at Jersey last Saturday as Cov put in a solid display to hold the Championship outfit to 21-21 with just a few minutes remaining.

Two late scores gave the hosts a 31-21 victory but Cov were left to reflect on what had been a positive performance ahead of this weekend’s National One opener at Hull Ionians.

However, they will not know whether fly half Jones will be available to make his competitive debut since his summer move from Bristol. The former Wales international was withdrawn after he was kneed in his calf, a mishap that allowed youngster Will Maisey to stake a claim for the No. 10 shirt.

And Scott Morgan was delighted with the way the Nottingham Trent student responded to his opportunity.

“Will came on and was outstanding,” the head coach said.

“He was excellent, he kicked all his goals from the touchline and made a very good impression. It was probably the standout performance at No. 10 during the whole of pre-season.

“We’ll look at Matthew on Tuesday night and make a decision but I would have no problem going to Hull with Will in the starting line-up.

“He has learned a lot from last season and has showed he has listened well during pre-season. And he’ll have a lot of capable players around him because we’ve strengthened in every area. That helps.”
