South African delighted to see team learn from mistakes.

Coventry match-winner Cliffie Hodgson believes Saturday’s victory at Richmond shows his team have learned from the mistakes of last season.

The South African landed a penalty with the last kick of the game to give Cov a 32-31 triumph, their third in three matches, to keep pace with the leaders in National One.

The full back compared that experience to the same match in February when Cov conceded a penalty try in the final seconds to lose by a single point.

That was just one of several late, close defeats that condemned a decent Coventry team to a disappointing tenth place finish.

They looked to be on course for a first loss of the new term too when Hodgson failed to convert Danny Wright’s late try and spurned the chance to level at
31-31.

But they showed the fortitude to hand their full back one last chance. “Last season we were in a similar position a few times and ended up losing and we kept saying we need to learn from these games because it would make us stronger,” said Hodgson.

“I would like to think we have done that, certainly Saturday was a good sign that we know how to close out the close ones.

“It was not our best game but not every game is going to be a great, great one.

“We got off to a slow start, similar to what happened last year there and before we knew it we were 14-0 down.

“But this time we managed to keep the scoreboard ticking over which kept us in the match. It was lucky but it was still an away win. We have got to keep our heads up and keep the ball rolling.”

By missing out on a try bonus Coventry slipped from top to third, behind Loughborough Students and Doncaster both of whom boast perfect records.
