Scott Morgan sent off as Cov's unbeaten run comes to an end...

The golden rule of any tight, competitive league game is to put points on the board when you can and worry about bonus points later.

Coventry didn’t, and ultimately it probably cost them their proud unbeaten run which, after 18 games, finally came to an end in leafy Surrey.

The warning signs had been growing – in recent games Cov had definitely strayed away from the patterns of play that had proved so effective leading up to the Christmas break but had, in the main, got away with it.

This was a step too far, however, and for once Cov’s strength of character and determination wasn’t enough to tip the scales as Esher’s excellent defence held out in a desperate finish.

Cov weren’t helped by the continuing curse of their number 7 shirt, the luckless George Oliver taking another hard knock after less than ten minutes of action and replaced by hooker Finlay Sinclair to leave them without a regular flanker in the back row.

Throw in the lottery that was the scrum – referee Jamie Leahy mystifying both sides in equal amounts – and a red card for Scott Morgan, and the ingredients were there for the final result.
