The statistics show third-placed Coventry can reflect on what has clearly been the best of their five seasons in National League One.

Apart from the 16-game winning and 18-game unbeaten run which took them to the brink of a promotion challenge, Cov have surpassed previous performances since their relegation from the Championship in a number of areas – setting them up for a potential title tilt next season.

After losing two of their first four games, Cov – the first side to topple eventual champions Ealing Trailfinders – played their way into a situation where a bonus-point win at Richmond at the end of January would have put them top of the table.

But the game was drawn, 28-28, and with Cov going on to lose three of their next four games and any realistic chance of promotion, head coach Scott Morgan acknowledges that it was the key result in their season.

“I think the game at Richmond was the turning point,” said Morgan. “Even though we drew and didn’t lose, it seemed to deflate us a little bit because it was a game we should probably have won quite comfortably.

“That was the one that hurt us, and to then go down to Esher and lose only compounded it. We should have got back on the horse, and we didn’t.

“After that, the reality was that it had gone away and I think it reflects the structure of this league with just one up and three down and without having a play-off for the second team to have a chance of promotion.

"I just think the structure needs to be looked at so there is always something to play for, and I think it would be good for the league as a whole to do that.”
