The Coventry Rugby squad for Season 2015/16 has now increased to 33 including 10 new signings, with the confirmation of three more signings, with winger Ryan Hough coming in from Nottingham, flanker Joe Carpenter from Moseley and prop forward Rikki Stout is retained from last season’s squad.
Ryan Hough, aged 24 has made 51 appearances over the past 4 seasons for Championship side Nottingham Rugby scoring 8 tries. He joins wingers Dan Rundle and Dom Lespierre in competition for places in this key position.
Joe Carpenter, aged 27 joined another Championship side Moseley from Dudley Kingswinford and has made 20 appearances for Moseley over the past two seasons. Wolverhampton born Joe prefers the No 7 position but is able to play in all backrow positions. An all action nuggety performer, Joe adds even more competition to an already strong backrow.
Rikki Stout prop forward, who joined Coventry Rugby at the start of Season 2014/15 has been retained after making 15 appearances last season. Another solid performer Rikki brings more overall competition to an already strong front row.
To date, I make that 7 props, 2 hookers, 3.5 locks, 7.5 backrow (0.5s for Danny Wright) and 13 backs.
I think we still need
- another lock (or better 2 locks)
- another specialist 8,
- another scrumhalf (plus maybe Pierre Ferre)
- another hooker (the lad rumoured to be coming from Chinnor ?).
I dont understand ryan houghs record, am i missing something?
51 appearances, 4 seasons, but only 8 tries? Surely that cant be correct, an average of a try every 6 appearences?
Im confident if thats right, he wont be challenging Dom or Dan.
Dont really understand the signing if the stats are correct to be honest. :-(
to put it into context Nottingham are not a prolific try-scoring side. Last season, in the backs the top try-scorer was the fullback with 5 tries from 21 matches, followed by a centre (Pohe on loan from Tigers) with 4 tries from 16 matches, the scrumhalf with 3 from 22 matches, then the 2 wingers with 2 from 20 matches and 2 from 17 (Hough).
Incidentally, Will Maisey has been let go by Nottingham, after making 17 appearances with 1 try and 84 points (top points scorer). Heath Stevens made 4 appearances with no tries.

So I would wait and see how Ryan Hough goes with more ball against the weaker Nat 1 defences before passing judgement.

Very interesting, rr. You can't argue with factual evidence.
As a matter of interest, could you bring us up to date with Heath S? He left us for Plymouth Albion, with whom I think he had one season, then I think he went to Wuss. Now it would appear you've tracked him down at Nottingham.
I believe Heath Stevens spent most of last season out injured. Interesting to see if Worcester keep him. Notingham has also released Corey Venus, will he return to Broad Street?
