...Saturday 10th October 2015 results round up including Hull  Ionians v Coventry Rugby.

Results Week 6 Saturday 10th October 2015.

A  fifth of the season gone and still no  definite trend emerging  at the top  end of the table, with no less than 9 clubs separated  by just 7 points, it is even closer amongst the top 6 with 4 points only between them. Unfortunately it is a bit clearer at the other end of the table with the bottom three sides Cinderford, Darlington Mowden Park and Blaydon still looking for their second win. Week 6 saw newcomers Ampthill & District finally lose their unbeaten record, allowing Hartpury College to take over as league leaders. Not an excuse but some teams were not at full strength on Saturday; whether this spewed some of the results remains to be seen.

Five wins in a row as Hartpury College surge to the top of the league as they defeated local rivals Cinderford , now back in 14th place with just one win. A full bodied encounter as expected, but with Cinderford’s lineout misfiring they were always on the back foot. Once again Hartpury’s full-back Gareth Thompson set the tone with his immaculate goal-kicking.

It was a closer game as Ampthill not only lost their unbeaten record but slipped to 2nd place as they were defeated at home by a resurgent Blackheath side, another side on a run of 5 consecutive wins, taking them to third place. Two early tries due to Ampthill’s errors one by the ubiquitous Dave Allen set Blackheath on their way. Once the home side got over their nerves in the second half they came more and more into the game, but a feature of Blackheath’s game this season has been their defence as they just managed to hold out.

Plymouth Albion found their visitors Esher in imperious form as they led 21-0 at half-time. A much changed  Albion side were unable to cope with the impressive Esher pack backed up by a master class at No 10 by former Albion player Paul Roberts. Esher enhanced their top 4 pretensions with this win, the loss by Plymouth suggests they will need longer to adjust to the rigours of this league.

Another tight game on Humberside saw Coventry Rugby shrug off the loss to two yellow cards at the same time to mount a fierce rear-guard action in the second half to withstand a Hull Ionians onslaught. Two early costly errors by the home side saw Coventry Rugby race into a 12 nil lead, but it was more even over the last 60 minutes, but credit to the away side for their defensive prowess. The win leaving Coventry just four points behind the leaders.

Richmond maintained their winning form with a win over visitors Blaydon, who performed a lot better than their bottom place suggests. In fact Blaydon led 10 nil at half-time before a misfiring home side stirred themselves in the second half helped by the retuning Andy Hall at fly-half. A better display by the bottom club but it is points they require not praise.

Fylde confounded the form book, if not themselves by finding the missing Plan B as they blew away pre-season favourites Rosslyn Park with a 3 try second half revival. Despite trailing 15-20 at half-time  mainly due to 2 yellow cards at the same time, Fylde got their running game together in the second running in a further 21 unanswered points. Two successive losses put Park down to 7th place yet still only 5 points behind the leaders.

Loughborough Students lost their fourth game, this time at home to league newcomers Henley Hawks in another tight finish. Henley’s No 8 Robbie Stapley scored a try in each half which proved to be the difference. Worrying times indeed for the Students as they are now only one place from danger.

The final game saw that enigma that is Wharfedale win their second game this time a thumping win over visitors Darlington Mowden Park. The game was effectively over at half-time as Wharfedale led 24 nil with 3 tries. A late second half fightback by Park saw a more respectable score but Dale were worthy winners. Darlington Mowden Park are already finding this season more of a struggle than last, this loss keeping them in 15th place.
