John Taylor’s programme notes on Saturday attached great significance to the half-way point in the regular league season. By this stage, he said, we will know where we stand in comparison to other Championship clubs. Instead of having a clearer idea, Saturday’s result only further muddied the waters and for many the jury's still out in terms of both the playing and non-playing aspects of the club.
The season started well. Solid performances against Bristol and Nottingham produced losing bonus points from each and the five point deduction was soon wiped out with a comfortable home victory against Birmingham and Solihull. The promising first half against Bees was followed by a gutsy win at Rotherham and there was every indication that the squad were starting to gel and Danny Wilson’s ambition of playing fast open rugby was coming together.
It was then the turn of Bedford to visit ODP. The Blues have always been a tough side to beat but this time London Welsh’s pace and power was just too much. A further bonus point in a hard fought game at Exeter and the team were on the ascendance. Six tries were scored in the comprehensive defeat of Cornish Pirates the following week but from this peak we have since seen performances slide.
A win against a poor Coventry side and a close victory at Moseley may have secured eight league points but in the minds of supporters this is no compensation for the capitulation against Doncaster and Plymouth, both teams that were below us in the league and tipped for a place in the bottom four play-offs.
We don’t have a bad squad. The players, individually and collectively, have shown their ability numerous times and we have more than a 50% league record. We probably would have been very happy with this if we hadn’t seen the potential fall away with such a dramatic loss of form.
So why has it gone so wrong? Key players have been injured – the absence of Tom Brown and Gordon Ross being particularly noticeable – but there seems to be something else missing. Lack of team spirit, not enough desire to win, discontentment, maybe even a lack of self-belief? It’s almost impossible to guess from the touchlines but whatever it is there is clearly something amiss within the squad. One thing we can be sure of it that Danny Wilson and Phil Greening will be doing their best to instil a winning attitude before we face Moseley in the Cup next Friday night.
Off the pitch it has hardly been plain sailing either. On the day of the Nottingham match the Sunday Telegraph revealed details of the on-going financial dispute between London Scottish (plus various related parties) and our Chairman, ‘technical difficulties’ held up the payroll for a number of the players and club staff and there have been rumours of bank accounts being suspended. Supporters were promised two or three new signings to bolster the squad (only one of which materialised) a two storey marquee/grandstand and a 2,500 seat stand (baby versions of each were installed) and we have had two periods without a functioning website. The refurbishment of the main grandstand hasn’t happened at all.
But as with the rugby it’s not been all bad. Supporters have taken the opportunity to get involved by sponsoring players, the aforementioned marquee and new stand certainly add to the match-day experience and ticket prices have been reduced. If the way to a rugby supporter’s heart is through his liver then the replacement of the awful Tetley and heavy Rev James with Brains Bitter and London Pride will help keep those livers struggling on a bit longer.
So do we know where we stand now we have reached the half way mark? The honest answer has to be no. Neither the players nor the new owners have fully proved themselves, too many questions remain unanswered and at the moment the stated ambition of securing Premiership status looks extremely fanciful.
There are now just eleven more league games to get it right otherwise a place in bottom four play-offs, or perhaps an even worse scenario, could be facing us in March.
I wonder what happened to that £2M in escrow?

On the other hand if this account from Danny in local paper is true, problems off the pitch appear to be seeping onto it; the players aren't fools, or schoolboys, although 8 am runs in Richmond Park might indicate some think they are.....
(danny Wilson)said: “The display against Plymouth was quite simply disgusting in terms of what we are trying to achieve.
“There was a complete lack of desire and enthusiasm.
“Those were my thoughts when we lost at home to Doncaster three weeks ago, and then we went and produced an excellent display at Coventry.
“I am not going to accept many more performances like that, and if the players were not aware of that before they certainly are now.”

Just because someone is petitioning for bankruptcy doesn't mean Neil is bankrupt (I think!).
Have to agree it doesn't exactly bode well for the immediate future though...
Where has all the money come from that has been spent up to now though?

Hearsay conjecture and title tattle should be left for the club house not posted on this supporter’s web site for all to see. It’s as damaging for the club as any court case, late payment or badly played game.

I think fans are all very sad at the Bankrupcy talk and the possibility that NH's "investment"may not work.

There's no Blackout. I think fans are all very sad at the Bankrupcy talk and the possibility that NH's "investment"may not work. No news of yesterday's High Court Bankrupcy division hearing, but the one held last month apparently gives him until early January to pay up £300,000 odd or be declared bankrupt, which, I guess, will mean he can't be a director of a rugby club (or Saudex, but that isn't a real entity anyway). So no Blackout, just a lingering sense of doom really

Then you might just get what people on the board are going on about.

If RDR becomes unable to fund the club for any reason, aren't we in the same position we were in in July. It wasn't an "end game" then, for the club at large.

I like think I know exactly what you are "going on about" but I'm not sure what success looks like for you. Assuming that Dragonhawk's post is genuine (and if it isn't, I'm sure it's representative), is that what you want to achieve?

Anyway there's a PM facility if you want to get personal. No need to inflict that on other people. Mun.

I'm just going by the judgement of the administrator and the RFU. I am, perhaps naively, assuming that they demonstrated due diligence.
If anything has "dragged the name of the club through the mud" I would say it was the winding-down of the old club (which also attracted lots of suspicion on the web). There's been plenty of name-dragging on this forum, just not the club's. If, hypothetically, we have been deceived, I like to think that people would understand.
So is that what you want then? A "semi-amateur club"? I'm not saying I agree or disagree, just trying to understand what you're advocating.

the administrator will also have some very awkward questions to answer if this 'owner' which supposedly proved it had funding for the next 2 years is made bankrupt...

All I have been advocating for months is a more critical look at NH and his credibility....

in terms of the salaries... london welsh paid the teams salaries. Kelvin is a sponsor and has kindly paid his sponsorship to help the club for this year along with other investors and sponsors whether it be a table for the year or a logo on the shirt
