So what will 2017 have in store at Goldington Road ... if the holiday games are anything to go by it will be lots of points.

The Blues managed 60 points over the two games which is normally a very good return. Unfortunately, our two opponents managed 73 between them - so let's rejoice instead in lots of free flowing rugby and forget the errors and slipped tackles.

The 39-37 thrilling win over Jersey, and the not so rewarding 36-21 defeat at a very good Irish, left us in 9th place with 26 points - nine behind Trailfinders who currently occupy the fourth place.

Such are the vaguaries of the season that our next league game isn't until the very end of January when Donnie Knights come riding in. They're in third place so another high scorer might be on the cards, but with no danger of slipping down to the bottom of the league, thanks to the unfortunate travails of Richmond and London Welsh, it really isn't a big deal.

There again a run of five pointers might just get us mounting an assault on the play-offs. Well - you have to start the New Year in optimistic mood.

Before the league resumes, of course, we do have Carnegie at home in the B&I. That's on Saturday the 14th with a 3.00 kick off.
