Steve Hayes Announced as Wasps Director

STAYING PUT

August 24 2007
London Wasps have announced Steve Hayes as a new, non-executive director, whose vision for Wasps is a long term "symbiosis" with Wycombe Wanderers FC at Adams Park. The co-founder and former CEO of successful finance company, loans.co.uk is also currently Managing Director of Wycombe Wanderers FC.

London Wasps press release conitnues:

On joining the London Wasps’ board, Hayes said:

"My appointment signals the developing relationship between London Wasps and Wycombe Wanderers to energetically pursue the feasibility of building a new Stadium in the High Wycombe area.

"For some time I have had such a vision to support the ambitions our board has for Wycombe Wanderers FC. I am delighted that the successful ground-sharing relationship we have had with London Wasps, for the last five years, is now planned to evolve to a deeper long term partnership. This should have tremendous benefits for the community in the High Wycombe area, which deserves a 21st Century Sports Arena.”

Chairman of London Wasps, Chris Wright said:

"I am delighted to welcome Steve to the board. His business acumen, energy and drive will be a great asset and represent part of our drive to invigorate our management team, as also evidenced by the recent appointment of our new CEO, Tony Copsey.”

John O’Connell, Vice Chairman of London Wasps added:

"Over the last couple of years, London Wasps has been investigating many options in the South East of England for a permanent home for a club of our standing. Professional club rugby is one of the fastest growing major sports and London Wasps intends to ensure it keeps pace with such demand going forward.

"As current European champions, and having won ten trophies in the last ten years, we are clearly soon going to outgrow the current capacity of Adams Park. We have been heartened by the support from the local community since we moved to Adams Park five seasons ago and a new stadium, with increased capacity, with Wycombe Wanderers FC, is our preferred option.”

Hayes concluded:

"We have a long way to go before our dream might become a reality, but my being on the board of London Wasps will help to ensure the two clubs ambitions are aligned and complementary to the vision of a High Wycombe Community Stadium.”

Steve Hayes Announced as Wasps Director

Sounds like good news to me, but I'm sure someone will correct me (Sm14)

In a perfect world I would liked Wasps to move back to N London. However, what I really want is for the club to put down some firm roots, grow its fan base, plus developing a ground that we benefit from and have a say in the running.

If Mr Hayes can help with this through his Wanderer and Wycombe contacts, I say welcome on board.

This must surely end any hope some of us may have had that the club will return to London.

Perhaps they'll finally remove the ridiculous "London" from the club name now. Ho hum. eye rolling smiley

No real surprise in this.

Steve Hayes has said for some time that he wanted a piece of the action at Wasps. At least he has put some money in as well.

The really significant thing is that Hayes now has a foot in both camps and that the vision is now totally shared.

Not a death knell for those who wanted Wasps out of Wycombe but it will take something seismic for a split to happen in the foreseeable future.

Methinks that WWFC, Wasps and WDC now have to come up with the goods on stadium relocation.

I wonder what our old 'chums' in the gasroom must be thinking!!

The Gasroom is having a mixed reaction, only a 60/40 anti-wasps split now. :-)

Cheers

Also suggests that Steve Hayes is a shrewd operator.

If anyone had spare cash and wanted to invest in a GP club, why go elsewhere?

With a track record of :

2 Heinys
1 Euro Challenge
3 GPs
1 Anglo Welsh

in the last 5 seasons and a shed load of young talent on the conveyor belt, it is a bit of a no brainer!!!!!

So where could a new stadium be built? Certainly not in the immeadiate vicinity of Wycombe.

There have been several sites under discussion.

The Handy Cross Sports Centre is soon to be vacated, but it is understood that this is not an option.

Smart money would appear to be on either the RAF site in Daws Hill Lane - again will be vacated soon or the Abbey Barn South site. Both of these are within a 1000 metres of each other.

Links to location and WDC document. Abbey Barn South is immediately to the east of RAF Daws Hill.

Over Half the Daws Hill Site will have to revert to Wycombe Abbey School. It was requisitioned from them as a "temporary" measure during WW2.

The current plans by the MoD is to flatten the site to make it more attractive to potential house builders - something that grieves me as someone who is looking for a Gymnastics facility in Wycombe, as, currently, there are 3 gymnasia on that site.

Great news indeed!

The benefits of full co-operation driven by a CEOs who are fully committed to the success of the partnership will be felt in all sorts of areas.

Welcome Steve.

Once a Wasp, always a Wasp.

As long as the two teams don't merge into one company aka LR Holdings PLC...

I welcome this move which hopefully would lead to a better and more permanent home for the club even if it is in the Wycombe area...

Graham
