Both teamsstruggled to stay on their feet at the breakdown, and the referee held regularconferences with the captains in an attempt to calm things down.
It took over15 minutes for the first score, when consistent off-side offences allowed Harlequins'James Loizos to slot the opening penalty. There was little way through foreither back line, and Belsize were continually denied by the tackling of the Harlequins'centres. After 30 minutes, the home side drove towards the corner and allowedWill Wessels to get the ball down for a try. 8-0 at half time and hardly aclassic!
The secondhalf saw the game played mainly in the centre of the pitch and a scrappy periodof dropped passes. Then with 15 to go, Belsize had a sustained period of attackon the Harlequins’ try-line. Each wave was soaked up by Harlequins and the ballwas eventually cleared. The next wave of pressure was ended only by an off-sideand Belsize converted the resulting penalty.
Immediatelyfrom the kick-off Harlequins retrieved the ball, and pushed upfield. From anup-and-under winger John Mahon was tackled late and Harlequins took the penaltyto take an unassailable 11-3 lead.
