The third pre-season friendly rapidly turned into a near rout as outclassed opposition were run ragged and Harlequins ran in seven tries to win 47 – 10 over Championship side, Nottingham.
Quins started the game at pace with an early break from Sam Smith taking play well into the visitors’ half. From a scrum the ball was passed rapidly and George Lowe chipped ahead for Ross Chisholm to run on at speed for the first try in only the second minute. Clegg duly converted. Nottingham’s response was a successful penalty kick that remained their only score until a consolation try twenty minutes into the second half.
It was the fifteenth minute before Quins scored again. A penalty allowed Clegg to find a good touch for an attacking lineout and from that the forwards set up two rucks in front of the posts. When the ball came out to the backs it went rapidly right for Ross Chisholm to take a poor pass off his bootlaces and cross for his second score. Clegg again converted for 14 – 3.
Another try followed shortly as a chip ahead fell for Karl Dickson with Clegg again adding the extras and then Will Skinner might have scored but was held up over the line. From the scrum that followed Quins were awarded a free kick and from that Guest crossed for another try by the posts. The conversion from Clegg made the score 28 – 3.
A fifth try, this time from Mike Brown ended the half with Clegg adding the extras and the visitors down to fourteen men following a yellow card waved at the familiar figure of Ayoola Erinle. The half time score was 35 – 3.
The second half started at pace and had only played a couple of minutes before simple passing at speed created an overlap on the left for George Lowe to score. Clegg again converted.
The visitors got their consolation try and conversion but then, despite the changes in personnel, the defence held firm. Quins added a further unconverted try near the end to run out very convincing winners.
