Jamie Miller encouraged by Coventry's return to winning ways

JAMIE Miller insists Coventry can take confidence from Saturday’s National One victory over bottom club Barking even though it came despite a scratchy performance.

The club captain returned from ankle surgery to make his first appearance for four months in Cov’s laboured 26-14 home win.

But even though the Blue and Whites didn’t play that well and frustratingly missed out on a try bonus, Miller believes there were several positive features.

Not least the fact it snapped a four-game losing streak, a run that had not seen them sucked into a battle at the bottom of the table but had some wondering whether they might be destined for that fate.

However, with another four points on the board and a couple of reinforcements to come in the backs, Cov appear to be moving in the right direction again.

“It’s a big confidence boost,” Miller said. “To win a game ugly like that is always pleasing especially as there was never any part of it when we felt under any pressure.

“At no point did they look like scoring a try, maybe apart from when they had that pushover, because throughout the game our defence was solid and we had a big scrummaging effort. We will take a lot of belief from that.

“Also scoring three tries without playing that well has to be a good sign.”

Indeed Miller feels Coventry’s dominance in the scrum became a distraction to the hosts as they slipped into a habit of making needless mistakes but then winning the ball back in the set-piece.
