So why have we had to wait until January for this? That’s the question thousands of Gloucester fans must be asking after watching their team beat Biarritz 23-8 in their second last Heineken Cup group match at Kingsway. It was their best display of the season, but so long overdue. The fact that only 10,000 watched a game between two giants of their respective domestic game in a tournament that has always traditionally attracted big crowds demonstrates how much the result mattered – the French side have walked the group and Glaws still only have an outside of making the quarter-finals, even after this result.
Lesley Vainikolo scored his first try of the season – in January! – while the other came from the impressive Tim Molenaar, Nicky Robinson converting both and kicking three penalties.
the crowd responded well to the team’s performance, and all in all it was a day that showed what we have been missing so often this season and what Glaws are still capable of achieveing.
Coach Bryan Redpath told the BBC: "We were smart and kept the scoreboard ticking over and we kept our patience. I'm delighted with the win.
"The key thing was that we stuck to our guns and held them at bay. We knew that if we played in the right areas we would create chances - and we took them.
"We now know that we have to get a good performance against Newport to stand a chance of a quarter-final."
That game comes next weekend, and on this form Glaws are more than capable of getting the result they need, though it won’t all be in their hands.
But wouldn’t it be good to make the quarter-finals – by the skin of our teeth or not – after all the disappointments and setbacks we have suffered this season?
One swallow doesn’t make a spring, but does put a spring in the step at last.
