Cru Stuffed

The Celtic Crusaders crashed to a humiliating 50-6 defeat on Saturday evening as the Wakefield Wildcats totally demolished John Dixon’s men at the Brewery Field. Cru suddenly didn’t have the rub of the green – with a host of refereeing decisions going against the South Walian outfit – but that shouldn’t hide a hugely disappointing display from the ‘Saders in front of only 2,089 supporters.

Despite last week's bitterly disappointing defeat against French outfit Catalans, Cru's supporters were hopeful for a first Super League home win after Wakefield slumped to a 54-6 defeat at home to Huddersfield last weekend.

However, the Wildcats totally bossed proceedings on Saturday evening and racked up a half-century of their own in front of Sky Sports' television cameras.

First-half tries from Ryan Atkins, Michael Korkidas, Scott Grix, Danny Brough and Brad Drew gave the hosts a thirty-point lead at the interval and their dominance continued after the half-time whistle.

Jamie Rooney scored twice after the break with further scores from Steve Snitch and Drew completing a thumping win for the Yorkshire outfit.

Cru, however, did bag late, late consolation as David Tangata-Toa scored in the closing moments.

The looks on the faces of the Wildcats players was one of disappointment as they failed, at the last, to "nil" the Crusaders. That tells the story of a thoroughly embarrassing eighty minutes.

Cru were out of luck with three tries ruled out by the television referee; with Wakefield being awarded three scores by the video. However, this was still a bitterly disappointing performance and the win at Odsal suddenly seems an age ago after two "winnable" home matches ended in convincing reverses for Saders.

Next up is an away trip against "local rivals" Harlequins. Hopefully, a good following of Cru fans will make the trip to Twickenham as Dixon's outfit bid for a second Super League victory.
