It was widely reported over the weekend and late last week that significant changes are to be made to the league format of the Rigby League and the greater integration of the Super League and the Championship. Including the re-introduction of relegation and promotion it would seem.

The RFL announced that the top two divisions are to run with 12-team leagues, splitting to three groups of eight, from 2015. The changes also mean a return to relegation from the top division for the first time since 2009.

RFL chairman Brian Barwick said: "I would like to thank the clubs for their contribution to what was a very fruitful and positive meeting. The clubs were unanimous in their view that Super League should become a 12-team competition from 2015 and that there should be meaningful movement between Super League and the Championship. There was a full and frank debate about the competition structures and a commitment to support the proposed format. The Super League clubs' decision will now go before the RFL's independent board of directors for ratification next week."

We all await full details of how the nee format and competition will look & operate - details are due to be issued later this month (January).

It does appear that this has not been universally accepted by fans. Perhaps it would be worthwhile waiting until all the detail comes out but surely anything which opens up the league to promotion by merit rather than selection must be a good thing?

Or am I simply being old fashioned?
