Competitive action in 2015 got underway for the South Wales Scorpions at Spotland, as they were comprehensively dumped out of the League One Cup by Rochdale Hornets.
Ian Talbot’s Lancastrian side now face Scorpions' rivals North Wales in the next round, following a seven-try victory.
The Scorpions played only one pre-season friendly – a 82-12 thrashing of new boys Cardiff City – and the favoured Hornets entered the game with more pre-season games under their belt, which may have helped their cause.
Amid difficult conditions, Danny Bridge, Bradley Hargreaves, Alex McClurg and Danny Yates scored first-half tries as the hosts took a 22-0 lead into the break.
Second-half scores from Dale Bloomfield, Jordan Case and Tony Suffolk compounded the Scorpions' misery.
The League One Cup is in its inaugural season, and involves all clubs competing in the third tier of the rugby league pyramid, as well as West Hull and East Leeds.
