Nuneaton have been taking a bit of a battering of late and things were looking bleak until last weekend’s win at Bradford & Bingley which moved Nuns up to second in National Three North. Next up are midtable Preston Grasshoppers who boast a home record that would have them among the promotion contenders but an away record of only one win.

However, their chances of improving on that seem to have been boosted after Nuns lost three of their more influential players last week.

With ten minutes gone back row pairing of Ian Critchley and Matt Aston were off with a shoulder and arm injury respectively and Nuns ended the match as they started with another influential player heading off with injury, this time fly half Rickie Aley with a wrist injury.

Director of rugby Mike Umaga said: “It was another hard fought match but it was a win all the same, which is what we needed. Rickie Aley will be out for a month or two. The other two are not as bad as we first feared so they could be back against Preston.

“The last three matches have all been tough. The two Hull teams and Bradford all play a similar style so we’ll have to keep our momentum going.”

“We have another four points up for grabs on Saturday so we will see how we will go after that.

“Preston had a good win last week [34-8 against Leicester Lions] so we need to be spot on if we are going to make a dent in the promotion race.

“Preston have a lot of history and they have some good quality home grown players, and, as with any of the teams from that area, we are expecting nothing less than a good fight.

“From what I know they have a more than capable pack, a competent goal kicker and a fly half who can put them in good positions so we have to plan our game accordingly.”
