RUGBY LIONS produced a spirited defensive display, but were edged out 12-10 by Fylde in a fiercely fought contest. Lions scrapped their hearts out against a dominant Fylde side, and came close to grabbing at least a draw.

In an opening spell in which Fylde had the wind at their backs, Rugby were made to defend tenaciously to preserve the deadlock, before Lloyd Warner grabbed a penalty for Lions after 30 minutes to make it 0-3.

But the Lions switched off for the first time during the clash, and Nick Royle crashed over for the hosts, with Tom Barlow kicking the conversion.

However, Lions came again and could have been ahead at the break had they not knocked-on at an attacking line-out when well placed.

The wind turned at the interval and once more allowed Fylde to play with it, and the Lions were forced to conjure up a stunning rearguard action to stay in the game.

And following a breakaway, Rugby scored through Matt Goode, while Warner added the extras to give Lions the initiative at 7-10.

But another try from Royle robbed Rugby of a famous win.
