Up and Under: Luke Myring's Coventry RFC column.

IT IS difficult to write my column this week as our game at the weekend up in Blaydon was called off due to a frozen pitch.

The squad had a really good week’s training last week and were ready for the game but if you ask me it was a blessing in disguise – when the match is replayed I think we will be even more ready.

It also gives us an extra week to regroup and to build on last week’s training and prepare for Barking at home this Saturday which, although I have said it before, really is a must-win match against the team lying bottom of the table at the minute.

Keeping things topical and not wanting to be just another opinion regarding the EPS squad announcement, I will follow on from the Andrew Flintoff documentary which was on TV last week on mental issues and depression in sport.

After reading about the young ex-Sale winger Selorm Kuadey, who tragically committed suicide last week after retiring from the game aged 24 due to injury, I feel it appropriate to bring it up as I hope eyes within the sporting world begin to open to these issues.

Sportsmen, obviously including rugby players, give everything to their sport, making massive sacrifice along the way to achieve the dream of playing at the highest level.

They spend every day with their mates ‘working’ (training) and most of the time live, breathe, eat and sleep their sport. Not all are like this as I have played with players who are quite happy to be there for the ride and to pick up their cheque at the end of the month but for those of us who are like this, what is there when it all ends, you pick up a seriously injury or things just go wrong?

Throughout my career I have had some bad injuries and been in some dark places but I have always been lucky enough to have my family and friends around me.
