LUKE Myring has revealed his joy at returning to the Coventry team for the first time in nearly a year.

While the experienced centre wasn’t especially happy with the result of Saturday’s 20-20 draw at home to Richmond, he could not hide his delight as the game marked an end to his 11-month nightmare.

The 28-year-old was making his first appearance since dislocating his ankle against Wharfedale last December and although Cov couldn’t finish the job after taking a three-point lead in the fifth minute of injury time, a fit and firing Myring will undoubtedly be a huge bonus for the rest of the season.

And Myring, who also suffered a pre-season setback when he injured his shoulder in a warm-up game, thanked the club for their help in getting him through some dark times.

“The club have been brilliant,” he said. “When we spoke in the summer (rugby director) Phil Maynard said it was going to be a bit of a risk offering me a two-year contract and I accepted that.

“So I cannot say enough about Coventry Rugby Club, they have been fantastic with me. It has been 11 months and they have never questioned me.

“I’m just so happy to be back on board and hope I can stay fit for the rest of the season.

“I’ll probably need another operation on the ankle at some point, maybe at the end of the season because with these things there’s so much scar tissue but for now things are only going to get better.”

However, it hasn’t always been that way and Myring admits that in March, four months into his recovery when he was told he would need a second operation, he wondered whether it was even worth carrying on with rugby.

His ankle would swell up after exercise, he couldn’t bend the joint and in the mornings he couldn’t even work on it – and that was after extensive and exhausting rehab.
