PETE Glackin insists there is no reason to be alarmed by Coventry’s league position which has them just one place above the National One relegation zone.

The backs coach admits there are tactical issues that need ironing out and accepts that their new team is taking longer to gel than the coaches had hoped.

But he also maintains that with their good home record, the best defence in the division and some outstanding performances under their belts he is expecting an upswing in results in the second half of the season.

“We are not panicked by it because we know the quality in the squad is there. It’s just a bit of fine-tuning with them,” Glackin said.

“We have shown what we are capable of against Wharfedale, up at Tynedale and against Blackheath. We are just trying to get some consistent patterns with them.

“They are still a new group of players and I know everyone wants everything quickly but people need to understand they are a new group that is being introduced to the pressures in this league.

“They are just finding their feet. A lot of lads haven’t played in this league before, Jacques Le Roux, Liam Munro, Cliffie Hodgson, regardless of where they have been before it is a challenging division and it takes time to adapt.

“Yes people are going to look at our position and get frightened by it but there is a lot of rugby to be played and a lot of points to be played for and we are going to go and collect them.

“I honestly believe we will have a strong second half of the season because of the quality we have got.”

Recent results have not been helpful, however. Cov lost for only the second time at home against Blaydon ten days ago and were narrowly beaten by a late penalty at Sedgley Park last Saturday.

Even that 19-17 reverse, though, was not without its positives and after producing two penalty tries in the scrums and having three other scores ruled out it was not difficult to imagine a scenario where Coventry picked up their second away win.

good news about Daynes and Gregson, both players that could add a bit of attacking spark.

It is indeed good news, most particularly about Brett Daynes because he consistently puts in good performances and is a quiet and un-sung hero.
I'm not entirely sure I accept PG's "don't panic Captain Mainwaring" attitude. It's perfectly clear that something has to be done, some action has to be taken. You can't afford to allow the situation to continue and hope that things will come right.
Positive action is what's needed.

The problem Pete, is that every season we have a team which is developing and making mistakes and there is no stability. And that is not your fault. Unfortunately with the nature of professional Rugby we will always be in that position, at the level we find ourselves in. Only at the top level can you ensure stability, short of finding a sugar daddy.
