Stuart Lancaster was today appointed as the NEW England Head Coach

STUART LANCASTER was today appointed England Rugby Head Coach until the end of January 2016.

Lancaster, who guided England to second place in the 2012 RBS 6 Nations, becomes permanent Head Coach with immediate effect following unanimous RFU Board ratification this morning.

Rugby Football Union Chief Executive Ian Ritchie said: “We have been through a rigorous and global selection process and are confident that Stuart is the right person to lead England Rugby forward into the 2015 Rugby World Cup. He has shown throughout the RBS 6 Nations and subsequently in both interview and other conversations I, as chairman of the advisory panel, have had with him that he has the skills and vision needed in the England Head Coach.

“I would also like to thank the advisory panel for their time and invaluable advice during the course of the process. I have been very lucky to be able to draw upon great rugby expertise and for that I am grateful.

“I am sure everyone in England will join me in congratulating Stuart on his appointment. He can be assured of my support and everyone in the Union as he embarks on what we all hope will be a successful period for English rugby.”

The 42-year-old Cumbrian said: “I am immensely honoured and proud to accept this role. From the hundreds of messages I received during the Six Nations I know what supporting England means to millions of people and I am privileged to be involved. The players, coaches and the management were superb during the tournament and it’s down to them that we made such positive steps from when we first met up in Leeds. The challenge now is to take this squad and the players we will see emerge forward to 2015. It is one that I can’t wait to get stuck into.

“We have a massive task ahead of us in South Africa this summer and we have 37 games before that first World Cup match on home soil, so every second counts in developing players who can win that tournament - which has to be the ultimate aim.

“I want to thank Ian and the panel for giving me the chance to explain my vision for England Rugby and, with their backing, I feel very positive about the future.”

As a grizzled old scrote from the front row union of the Yorkshire Leagues I'm Quite happy with that.If he can keep Farrell in the set up and find someone to pep up the back division then I reckon we have a starter for ten.

Now is the time for all England fans to get behind the whole team and give them some time to grow and develop . That means not jumping on to the press bandwagon who will be after him idf the SA tour is not reasonably successful. Although I notice Mr Barnes has opened his mouth already to give him a thumbs down.

Mr Barnes - what does he know, he is living earning money on making controversial statements that is all - in my book he is past it and holds grudges

Would not take any notice of what he has to say

I'm slightly biased, being a Leeds supporter, but Mr Barnes' negativity is presumably based on the fact that all his old crony mates have now been swept aside by the shift in focus to the future.

Well done the RFU on picking the right man for the job! Last time they did that we won the World Cup. (No pressure, Lanny...)

Congratulations Stuart! Excellent news.

Barnes has never been sympathetic towards England coaches, and for the last 8 years he's been spot on, but he's blown this one. I've written a little piece about it this evening:

I really am surprised that Lancaster got the gig, I didnt think they had the balls to give it him! Lets hope that its an indication of some forward thinking and in response to another who mentioned the Saffer tour, I'm not expecting to come back with a series win, lets hope the press act with some sense.

Best I think to judge Lancaster and England on the manner in which the play, possibly the manner of a defeat and how they handle it and a continued steady level of progression in the following AI's and subsequent 6N's!

Me, I reckon we still have a problem which needs sorting at 10, 12 and or 13, there I said it!!!!! But I find it easier to be optimistic than I have for some considerable time.

Here's to Lancaster and letting others (NZ, Aus, SA and them bloody Welsh) know we will be there or thereabouts come 2015.
