England Squad for Argentina Tour 2013

ENGLAND today named 11 uncapped players in their squad for this summer’s Barbarians game and three-match tour to Uruguay and Argentina.
They are forwards Rob Buchanan (Harlequins), Calum Clark (Northampton Saints), Matt Kvesic (Worcester Warriors), Ed Slater (Leicester Tigers), Henry Thomas (Sale Sharks) and Billy Vunipola (London Wasps), and backs Kyle Eastmond (Bath Rugby), Jonny May (Gloucester Rugby), Joel Tomkins (Saracens), Christian Wade (London Wasps) and Marland Yarde (London Irish). England – minus the players from the Aviva Premiership final the previous day – are taking on the Barbarians at Twickenham Stadium on May 26 before playing a CONSUR XV, representing the South American nations, in Montevideo, Uruguay, on June 2, and then Tests against Argentina in Salta (June 8) and Buenos Aires (June 15). Captained by Northampton Saints’ Tom Wood, the group includes five players who are 21 or under, the youngest of whom is London Wasps No.8 Billy Vunipola, who represented England Under 20s last year. England Head Coach Stuart Lancaster said: “We’re really looking forward to this tour and we’ve selected a young and exciting side which I’m sure will do the country proud in a tough series of matches. “The key principles in selection were threefold: first and foremost to win the games but also to develop strength in depth and more options in certain positions, and to give one or two players a physical and mental break. “We feel we’ve got the balance right and have given places to a number of players who have shone in the Aviva Premiership this season, one or two who have been on the fringes for a while, and several players who have been involved over the last year or so. This is everyone's chance to step up. "Tom Wood will captain the side and I am sure he will do a fantastic job, as he has the respect of all the players and management and we are looking forward to other leaders developing in the absence of some senior players. “A few are being rested after a hard campaign but they will, of course, be considered by the British & Irish Lions should they be required.” Players rested include Chris Robshaw, Danny Care (both Harlequins), Toby Flood (Leicester Tigers), Brad Barritt and Chris Ashton (both Saracens). 1. Do you mean for the tour or continuing? I don't see an England centre pairing for the short to mid term without Tuilagi, not do I believe it would necessarily be prudent. Certainly good to see alternatives.
2. Are you suggesting Goode doesn't have pace? I too am a fan of Foden, but Goode has been an improvement on Foden's form in his (Foden's) latter England matches. Both at top of their form I would take Foden all day long.

4. I like the sound of, but think there is still a fair bit to come from Morgan.
5. Almost agreement, but I would prefer that he (Ashton) rediscovers form and gets his place back on merit.

WORLD Cup winner Lawrence Dallaglio is backing Tom Wood to fill the void left by Chris Robshaw's absence when the Northampton Saint leads England in Argentina this summer.
Saints back row Wood has been named as captain by head coach Stuart Lancaster, with Harlequins flanker Robshaw rested having missed out on British & Irish Lions selection.
Robshaw captained England throughout the Six Nations, but Wood will step into the role as one of the few senior figures in a young 32-man squad named by Lancaster for the June Tests.
Dallaglio, a former England captain himself who was led by Martin Johnson to World Cup glory in 2003, was replaced as skipper by Phil Vickery for the 2002 tour of Argentina after picking up an injury while playing for London Wasps.
And speaking from that experience, he believes Wood has a chance to make a name for himself as captain this summer.
"Chris Robshaw has got an enormous amount to be proud of with what he has done this season, and could still do as he may well yet go on the Lions tour - who knows what might happen," said Dallaglio.
"Tom Wood has had a stop-start campaign and could easily have been England captain (before Robshaw).
"The captaincy is great for Tom but I think he will just want to get back playing in an England shirt and get some consistency in terms of the opportunities he gets. It will be a big responsibility.
"I missed out on an England tour to Argentina in 2002 when I broke my thumb against Bath in the last game of the season and Phil Vickery went on to captain England for that tour and led England to a victory.
"One man's withdrawal is another man's opportunity so I am sure Tom will do England proud."

If I'm going to be picky, I suppose I could question selection of the scrum halves, not that there is anything wrong with them per se, but neither are likely to displace Youngs or Care and they are not exactly ones to succeed them either. I'm not convinced that Goode running from deep "has it" Hogg does and a fit Foden does ............... If I know what Goode is going to do when running from depth I reckon a 12, 13 and 6 does too.
I see 12Trees and Tomkins with a potential for greater creativity than a centre pairing including Tuilagi (in the long term) I reckon Tuilagi's options might be at 14 or warming a bench .......... I dunno, perhaps its still some frustration from a disappointing 6N's.
Morgan delivering is down to Morgan.
I agree Tomkins and 36 have 'potential' to be more creative, but not necessarily more effective. Tuilagis explosiveness is an asset. His hands seem to be improving too (actually proably that his brain is improving and he is making better decisions on when to offload). I can agree that Tuilagi from the bench (I think likely to be his Lions spot) could be frightening.
