Pirates v Ealing

Cornish Pirates v Ealing Trailfinders
Saturday 16th February KO 14:30
Offy Preview & Team

A big game in store and a 14:30 Saturday kick off for a pleasant change, plus 100 games up for Tom Duncan and Marlen Walker.

3rd v 2nd and whilst Trailfinders have won 11 games to Pirates’ 8 scoring 53 more points, their defence has leaked 40 more.

A hard one to predict, the bookies seem to favour the Pirates as do many on the Rolling Maul Forum but I’m backing the boys to put in a winning shift backed up by a large home support.

It would be interesting to see Stalwart’s prediction as he currently tops the prediction league, closely followed by Caradon, Porthusek and Tintagel.

What do the rest of you think?

I think we'll struggle against a very good side given a few key people not playing. Fingers crossed

We can do this - our defence has been brilliant recently. As always, it will hinge on set piece. If we can get the line out right and at least hold our own at scrum time our dangerous backs can really test Ealing.

You'll have all the London Irish fan base supporting you if that's any help...!

Beaten by a better team today. Ealing defence was rock solid - don't remember them missing a tackle. We competed well first half and should have gone in ahead, but conceded a try right on the stroke of half time. We weren't really in it second half and Ealing gradually got on top and we couldn't break out. Lineout was very shaky again, but scrum was OK - unfortunately Marlen sustained a nasty ankle injury so may be out for a while. The Ealing scrum half, Byrne (I think was his name) was outstanding.
Tough ask to go away to them next week, but the boys will give it a lash, that's all we can ask.

Probably Burns - former Blues scrum half and occasional winger.

Very hard to argue with the result today. Despite their disrupted arrival, ET were right up for this from the KO. In short, pirates were beaten up today with ET too powerful in the contact and in open play. Their 9 was outstanding and deservedly warmly applauded by the grandstand on his substitution. Arguably one of the most complete away performances seen at the Mennaye for quite a while. This was a smash and grab - with the emphasis on smash. LI and ET are the two standout teams in this league and on this evidence it's easy to see why. I fear for the scoreline next week tbh - but I'll be there to cheer on the boys!!

I agree with the previous comments on the day we were beaten by the better side.Ealing's bigger pack won the collisions and laid the platform for their half backs to control the game. We defended well but when fatigue set in and gaps appeared around the breakdown they were superbly exploited by their scrum half who was deservedly MoM.
I'm always disappointed when we lose but when you take into consideration the difference in the playing budgets we are competing well with a very well funded club.

agreed - the performance by Burns was the best individual effort i think i have seen, he ripped us to shreds

Burns was at Quins before spending five seasons at Bedford.

I see on the official website that Nodar Cheishvili played for Georgia at the weekend. He must have played more for his country than his club this season. In fact I thought he'd left us to be honest.

Actually Bill I had a chat with Tom Duncan afterwards and he was bemoaning the fact that Burns did the same to us last season for the Blues

Totally agree, outplayed by ET but we made it easier for them with poor line-outs and far too many box kicks.
