COVENTRY’S Mr Consistent Brett Daynes admits the decision to leave him out of the starting line-up for the last home game has spurred him on.Ever since he moved to Butts Park more than two years ago the South African-born flanker has been a mainstay of Phil Maynard’s side.

But he was left on the bench for the clash with Blackheath just under a fortnight ago, a decision that broke a run of 52 consecutive starts, an incredible feat in such an attritional position.

Instead for just the second time in his Cov career Daynes had to come off the bench towards the end of Cov’s 13-10 victory and – after returning to the starting line-up at Esher last weekend – the former Bedford man says he has no quibbles.

“Competition is high in the back row which is good for everyone,” Daynes said. “Obviously I am not going to be playing 30 out of 30 this season but the upside of that is it will keep me fresh and everyone will be on their toes for the games.

“My form took a bit of a dip at Fylde where Mark Hopley and Liam Munro played well and with Jacques [Le Roux] coming back you can see why they chose to change it.

“It was justified and it gives you something to strive for, maybe when you play week in week out you get a bit comfortable.

“It refocused me, you realise that every weekend is a trial match and you have to play your best. And that’s not just me, the competition in the squad is massive and I don’t think many will start every game this year.”

Only Greg Evans, Cliffie Hodgson and skipper Scott Morgan are in that position at the moment and all three are expected to retain their spots for this weekend’s visit from Wharfedale.

Cov approach that match looking to make up for the disappointing display turned in at Esher last time out when they went 7-0 up only to flop and lose 27-10.
