COVENTRY’S new winger Ed Tellwright has spoken of his delight at marking his first-team debut with a try.

The 24-year-old, who has yet to formally sign for the Butts Park outfit, did his cause no harm at all last Saturday when he came off the bench to finish off the all-important fourth score in the 29-19 victory over Tynedale.

Tellwright will hope to retain his place in the squad for this weekend’s visit from Rosslyn Park, the division’s highest scorers, and also do more to convince Phil Maynard it is worth extending the former Jersey player’s stay in the city.

Bristol-based Tellwright is one of several players who have come to Coventry midway through the season – having started his campaign in the Championship where he played six times for the Channel Islanders and scored against Doncaster.

But he became a free agent at the end of that four-month contract, until Maynard got in touch – and after a couple of Nighthawks matches he was given his opportunity last weekend.

“I rocked up on Thursday and the guys said they were going to put me on the bench at the weekend but I had it in my mind that they are still looking at me and would give me the last 20 minutes to make a decision.

“But when I went in at half-time it was clear Tom [Harris] wasn’t right so they said ‘You are going to go on’. I was chuffed about that but to get the try at the end I was thrilled.

“That’s why I play the game, it’s my job but to get the bonus-point score on a home debut I was really happy.”
