Now we really are looking forward to the next eight months - the old and the new starred in a great team performance as Gloucester opened the new season with an encouraging derby win over Bath at Kingsholm. With Nicky Robinson running the show on his fly-half debut, James Simpson-Daniel scored two tries as Glaws won 24-5.
A lot of the nerves both in the dressing room and on the terraces will hopefully have disappeared thanks to an assured performance that bodes well for the reign as coach of Bryan Redpath. It wasn’t perfect, there’s a very long way to go and one swallow doesn’t make a summer – but this was a great start to the campaign by anybody’s standards. Sinbad scored two tries and Robinson scored the rest of the points with a try, three conversions and a penalty to Bath’s single try. Eliota Fuimaono-Sapolu (from now on known here as EFS to save space, right celebrating Robinson's late try) also had a good debut while Andy hazel was, well, Andy Hazell. But it was the team display that caught the eye, and Glaws followers can feel highly encouraged after this. Hopefully the performance will mean that a disappointing first-day crowd of 12,815 will grow as the season progresses. The same, we hope, will apply to the team's confidence and team spirit.
Great stuff and well played. A big win considering the ref barely knew the offside rule at the ruck and Hazey can consider himself a very lucky lad not to of been sent off. Robinson was superb and long may it continue but Glaws are far from the finished article and in some ways thats pleasing.
Bath aren't going to win anything this season, but a win is a win and most of us would have been delighted if we'd been told the score before the game. The performance was a bonus.
This was a great win for Glaws, they wanted the win more and showed that now the restrictions that Dean Ryan imposed on the team by restricting the amount of ball the backs had was the main failure for the poor end to the season. Well done Redpath at least you continued to warm up with the boys even with the promotion.....There was a whole different atmosphere in the ground and style of play. If we continue to play like this and make more effort to iron out the silly mistakes who knows......clean sweep
But why on earth did Gloucester kick the ball out of play immediately after the final hooter went? Couldn't they be bothered to attempt to get a fourth try and consequent try bonus? Bath couldn't have got a losing bonus anyway so there was nothing to lose. I just don't understand it. An extra point could be essential by the end of the regular season.
Valid point jack but I think everyone got a bit caught up in the moment. If Glaws miss out by a point this season you can be the first to say 'told you so'.
It was refreshing to see Glaws throwing the ball around again and once the tackle area is reffed with consistency then Glaws could go well.

It happened to us (Rugby Parma FC) to lose out by a point last season and the season before. We were put out of the Italian Super 10 semis 3 minutes before the end of our last regular season game in 2007/08 and 8 minutes after the end of our last game in 2008/09 (because a game elsewhere had gone into injury time). Both times another point would have seen us through. Extremely gutting (to say the least)...
May be the clean sweep may be a bit too much to ask from the guys but i am sure that if they continue to show the commitment and flair that they showed on Saturday other teams will be seriously wondering if they can compete and secure a win. Yes i know that if Bath had a kicker the score would have been closer and this is the first game of the season,but surely if we put that amount of pressure on the opposition from the start the impossible (according to Two Sheds) may be possible. Lets get behind the lads and show true support unlike the minority that would not shut up when Barf were taking their penalties something i did not hear from Barf when we were kicking for goal. Maybe there is some good in Barf.......did I really say that!!!.
Yes, I don't want to appear as a pessimist. But let's be realistic and give them a few more games, eh? However, I do hope you optimists are right ... I'll be cheering every move if you are.
