How a squad reacts to defeat can make the difference between a good season and an average one. No team is going to win every game, but if they can bounce back after a setback, then they clearly have good foundations laid.

That’s why Gloucester badly need to win when they open their home campaign against promoted Worcester at Kingsholm this weekend.

With coach Bryan Redpath quite rightly looking at the positives as well as the negatives from the opening loss at Northampton, it appears the Glaws glass is half full rather than half empty. After all, they were VERY close to winning the game rather than losing it.

And with the players making the sort of noises that back up Redpath’s views, the signs look hopeful.

Hooker Darren Dawidiuk says there were plenty of positives at Franklin’s Gardens for the players to feed on.

Redpath said: There was lots of endeavour, lots of commitment and they were all working hard. We battled hard to get into a position to win the game, but it wasn’t to be.

“But that’s life and we have to get on with it – the players gave 100 per cent and I can’t ask for any more than that.”

Indeed he can’t, but there’s no doubt he will be asking for a bit more in other respects at the weekend.

Worcester returned to the Premiership with a bang, veteran Andy Goode guiding them to a 17-12 win over Sale with seven points that made him the second highest points scorer in the Premiership.

He’s looking forward to playing at Gloucester, but admits it won’t be easy: "I love playing at Kingsholm, but I won't get the best of receptions.

"The last time I played there was for Leicester in a semi-final when we won the game pretty close to the end, so I always get a good booing down there.

"It's quite interesting living in Cheltenham - no doubt I'll get a bit of banter this week and the school run should be fun." Goode is, of course, a class act and he can be expected to rise above any treatment the Shed can give him on Saturday afternoon.

It’s up to Glaws to use their home advantage to help carve out the win they need.
