It wasn't pretty, it was hardly entertaining and it certainly wasn't inspirational ... but at least they won. We could be describing England v Wrgentina, but in fact it's Gloucester v Worcester in a game that didn't do a lot to revive spirits after that drab start to a busy rugby weekend.

Gloucester 29, Worcester 8 is a welcome win that looks all right on paper, but on the pitch it didn’t look much good at all at times.

Or are we being too harsh? At least it was a win without worries thanks to two converted tries and five penalties, but the use of words like “dull” and “turgid” in some reports are not far off the mark.

Jonny May’s early try heralded 16 unanswered points for Glaws as Tim Taylor kicked well, and after the break Freddie Burns kicked another pen before Tom Voyce’s try made sure for Glaws, though Dale Rasmussen got a late Wuss consolation.

Glaws coach Bryan Redpath told the BBC: "We went into the game with 13 players unavailable and to come out with a performance that was disciplined was great.

"Sometimes we were a little cautious which is unlike us, but we had to make sure that we picked away at the penalties.

"It was the first game for the referee in the Premiership so we knew he would referee to the letter of the law, but we controlled the contact area really well, were honest and worked hard.”

Skipper and man of the match peter Buxton told the club website: “We kept our shape in defence and got a few turnovers that way.

“It was great to be back at Kingsholm in front of our home crowd, they are always a big help to us. It was not the most exciting game, but we are just happy that we got the four points.

“Harlequins won’t be easy next weekend, they are flying high and getting good results, but we’ll be confident because we know we should have won at Northampton and we now have our first win under our belts.”

What a pity it wasn’t more of a spectacle for the fans, but most will be just like Redpath –pleased with the result.

It was never in doubt once May crossed the line, but Glaws made hard work of it at times. However, we shouldn’t complain too much because it was the first home game of the season and after the disappointment at Franklin’s Gardens, it was vital that Glaws got a win, no matter how.

We can worry about style later, perhaps even at Harlequins next weekend.
