Gloucester have battled their weay out of one self-created corner - now they have to make sure they don't tall into the same trap again. Beating Bath was one step on the road to redemption after the Harlequins humiliation, but they need toi take a few more before they can say they have fully recovered.

The fixtures have fallen kindly for them, because there’s no doubt Bryan Redpath would have asked for another home game if he could have chosen one – never mind the opposition.

In fact, it’s London Irish on Saturday lunchtime – sixth v fifth in the Premiership, a game which could make a massive difference to Gloucester’s fate this season.

Win and most, if not all, might be forgiven. Lose and we are back in the mire.

Inconsistency is a nightmare feared by all sports coaches, and it’s a problem which has raised its ugly head for Bryan Redpath already this season.

But, like the fans, he is hoping that is a thing of the past.

After the Bath win last weekend, he told the club website: “We gained a lot of confidence from defending well for long periods when we had to, though ideally you don’t want to get into situations like that.

“After last week it was really important that we dug in and showed lots of character and passion. The discipline was far better – we got our mindset right and we always knew that there was going to be a reaction from last week.

“We played as a team, worked together and got our rewards. We can’t afford to make it easy for the opposition to beat us.”

He’ll be looking for the same qualities against Irish, when once again Redpath believes that playing in front of 15,000 Glaws fans should be enough motivation to get the team to play to its peak.
