Premierhip break for Glaws to solve problems

The 2011-12 LV= Cup was launched at Kingsholm during the week as the champions paraded the trophy they won last season, and as they play their first game in defence of the title they need to launch something of their own - a comeback.

After losing in the Premiership at Sale last weekend, Glaws face the same opponents in their first LV= pool game and only a clear victory will do to end some of the worries that cropped up at Stockport.

Gloucester captain Luke Narraway and colleagues Charlie Sharples and Henry Trinder were joined by coach Bryan Redpath as this season’s competition was launched, and they won’t want to look mugs when they take to the pitch in a more serious vein on Saturday afternoon.

Sharples told the club website: “The LV= Cup was a massive highlight for myself and the other Gloucester boys last season as it was the first trophy we'd won for a number of years.

"For me personally, it resulted in my first winner’s medal at senior level and I think that the exposure I got through the semi-final and final really helped push my England claims."

The exposure some non-performers have been getting in New Zealand has also pushed his England claims, of course, but that’s another story.

Most of the club’s World Cup players are back now, and will hopefully be available for the weekend, though some have returned more bruised than others and it’s not yet clear who will play.

Glaws need to win this one not only to get their defence of the trophy off to a good start, but also to put to bed the memories of last weekend’s defeat.

The most pressing need on Redpath’s agenda ... it’s even more important that he and his players solve what has become a major flaw – their bad record on the road. Their next away game is the second of their early LV= dates, a visit to under-performing Leicester at Welford Road on Friday night next week.

It isn’t the Premiership, but it’s a game both teams will be desperately keen to win.

That Leicester away game will be interesting. After their stop start campaign so far, they'll be after blood. However, that should prepare us nicely for the visit of Saracens the following week.

We need to maintain our home record first and foremost, and learn from the mistakes of last weekend.

Yes, home record must be maintained, but if we can't solve the away problems we are right up the creek.
