Phillips - Glaws deal

With players like Wales fly-half Stephen Jones linked with a switch to Kingsholm next season, Gloucester are clearly still a club big enough to be linked with the biggest names. But they have more immediate pressing problems to solve as their form continues to see-saw.

 Jones is said to be keen on a move to Kingsholm when his Scarlets contract expires at the end of the season, but when you are 34 and your career is coming to an end, you’ll always welcome the chance for a final pay-day.

It’s easy for the media to link clubs and players, and such reports should always be taken with a shovel-full of salt. 

The time to start believing is when the player is photographed signing a contract or when Bryan Redpath says he has done a deal. 

He has done one this week, of course, by signing former Stade Francais winger Ollie Phillips as cover for the departed Lesley Vainikolo until the end of the season. However, he says he won’t be seeking a similar replacement for Ollie Morgan, out for the rest of the season through injury. 

He told the Citizen: “We won’t be looking specifically for a full-back to come in short-term now, not right now – but then you just never know. 

“As things stand I’m pretty pleased with what we’ve got, with Ollie coming in.” 

Redpath will be looking for a good performance at Kingsholm on Saturday when they face Toulouse in their final Heineken Cup pool game. 

Glaws are out of the competition, but they can still make a difference to the final table and Redpath told the club website: “I can’t fault the effort of the players in the Heineken Cup, but we have to keep plugging away. We can’t get too downhearted because it’s been a tough group. 

“As for Toulouse, they are the Barcelona or the Manchester United of club rugby, so it’s a great opportunity for our players to go toe to toe with one of the best teams and some of the best players in the world. 

“We shouldn’t be frightened or intimidated – it’s a chance to shine against some big names.” 

The Heineken Cup is quickly followed by the LV= Cup as Glaws are at home to Cardiff and away to London Irish on the next two weekends – a good performance against Toulouse would set them up nicely for those games.

They all left the chartered plane before take-off as they thought it unsafe
