Glaws get their man - Davies is new boss

Davies - new man

Cynics will be asking whether it was more than a coincidence, but at the very time Bryan Redpath was comfirmed as the new director of rugby at Sale Sharks, his replacement at Gloucester was announced ... and there's no real surprise there, either.

Nigel Davies has been installed as the new boss at Kingsholm after a compensation deal was agreed with Welsh club Scarlets, and Glaws are saying he was always the firstg choice for the job.

If that’s the case, the obvious question is “why did it take so long, and why the apparent smokescreen of scouring the world for a replacement?”

But there can be no arguing with Davies’s pedigree … he comes with a top record as a coach in Wales and Glaws MD Ken Nottage told the Citizen: "Nigel was always our first choice.

"We are really delighted to appoint him. In my dealings with Nigel, every time I have met him I am more and more sure that he is absolutely the right man for the job at Gloucester.

"He is a very good fit, not just his credentials as a coach but what he is about as a person. I think he suits Gloucester perfectly.

"He was very attracted to this club and he sees it as something that will develop him as a coach further and he believes there are great similarities between the clubs as well.”

Davies starts the new job next week and will have a fortnight b efore the players report for pre-season training. He has a reputation for getting the best out oif backs, while Carl Hogg – who was on the Glaws shortlist for the job – will continue as forward coach.

Dacvies told the BBC: Professionally, I know this is the right decision, but emotionally it has been one of the most difficult things to do.

"I have always felt that at the right time, I'd want to challenge myself in a different environment and this new role presents me with that exciting new ambition.

"It has been a true honour and a privilege to be head coach of the Scarlets and the last four years has been one of the most proud periods of my professional career."
