Davies doing two jobs at once for Glaws

Hudson - new boy

Although work on building a squad for next season is well under way, Gloucester coach Nigel Davies is determined not allow this season's priorities to drop into the background - beginning at home to London Welsh this weekend.

Glaws have signed line-out specialist James Hudson from Newcastle Falcons as an obvious squad replacement for Jim Hamilton, who is heading for France once the season is over.

But with two Premiership home games in a week coming up, there are more pressing matters on the horizon than who plays where next season.

On Hudson, Davies told the Citizen: "He's a proven Premiership performer and a very shrewd lineout operator. I'm very much looking forward to him arriving for pre-season.

"James is very mobile for a big man, which will suit the way we try and play the game.

"He will also bring experience and leadership qualities to the squad, which will be valuable assets."

The sort of qualities, in fact, Glaws will need against Welsh on Saturday and Harlequins on Good Friday evening, two games that will act as perfect trailers for the Euro quarter final at home to Biarritz the following weekend.

So while it’s been quiet for Gloucester’s non-internationals for a couple of weeks, you can guarantee it’s going to warm up now and London Welsh won’t be an easy team to beat at the start of that three-game home run.

With problems off the pitch as well as on it, the exiles are bottom of the table but have an appeal against their five-point deduction two days before the game at Kingsholm.

Even if they win the appeal, though, they are still in danger of going down and will only be three points ahead of Sale.

Their attitude on the pitch on Saturday could be shaped by what happens at the London appeal 48 hours earlier.

Glaws, meanwhile, need to hit their form if their own top-four ambition is to be realised.
